Directing 101: How to Get the Best Performance from Actors

One of the most challenging aspects of directing is working with actors to achieve authentic and compelling performances. It requires empathy, clear communication, and a deep understanding of the character's journey.

Create a Safe Environment

Actors need to feel safe to take risks. A set should be a place where failure is just a stepping stone to finding the right emotion. The director sets the tone. If the director is calm and supportive, the cast will be too.

Action Verbs over Adjectives

Never tell an actor to `be sad` or `be angry.` Emotions cannot be played directly; they are the result of actions. Instead, use action verbs: `try to convince him,` `plead with her,` `intimidate them.` This gives the actor an active goal to pursue in the scene.

Furthermore, casting is 90% of directing. If you cast the right person, your job on set is mostly about subtle adjustments and ensuring the actor understands the context of the scene within the larger narrative.

Trust your actors. They have spent hours analyzing the script from their character's perspective. Sometimes, the best direction is no direction at all.
